Hang Samples

Installation:

1. Lade das Sample Packet hier herunter

2. Unzip den Inhalt der Datei

3. Das hang.exs file gehört in den Ordner ‚SAMPLER INSTURMENTS‘ (auf einem Mac befindet sich dieser auf der Festplatte bzw. Mac-HD > LIBRARY > APPLICAITON SUPPORT > LOGIC > SAMPLER INSTRUMENTS)

4. Kopiere den Ordner mit den Hang-Samples an einen beliebigen Platz (oder bevorzugt in den selben Logic-Ordner, falls Logic Probleme hat, die Samples zu finden).

5. Starte Logic und erzeuge einen neuen Instrument Track, in dem ein EXS-Instrument geladen wird – die Hang-Samples sollten als Patch spielbar sein.

Die Hang Drum wurde 2000 von den Schweizer Instrumentenbauern Felix Rohner und Sabine Schärer von Panart entwickelt und hat seitdem eine immense Nachfrage weltweit ausgelöst, der die beiden Entwickler kaum noch nachkommen können. Um ein Hang erstehen zu können, muss man sich auf einer langen Warteliste eintragen lassen und hoffen, eines Tages ein Instrument zu bekommen. Mein eigenes Instrument ist eines der ersten Generation mit einer so genannten „Hitzazkiar“ Stimmung, einer persischen Skala mit den Tönen A3, D4, Eb4, F#4, G4, A4, Bb4, C#5 und D5. Ich mag dieses Tuning ganz gerne, weil es ein gewisses Mass an harmonischer Reibung erzeugt und nicht so „nett“ und spannungsarm klingt wie die üblichen pentatonischen Stimmungen. Das Hang ist unglücklicherweise all zu oft in billigen Weltmusik-Verschnitten und new-age-artiger Wohlfühlmusik eingesetzt worden, da es kinderleicht ist, auf dem Instrument wohlklingende Klangmuster zu erzeugen. Ich glaube, das musikalische Potential dieses Instruments ist noch lange nicht ausgeschöpft, mit der Ausnahme weniger brillianter Musiker wie z. B. Manu Delago, dessen fantastisches Hangspiel auch schon Millionen von Leuten auf youtube begeistert hat und der seit ein paar Jahren mit Björk unterwegs ist.

Install:

1. Download the sample pack here

2. Unzip the contents of the archive

3. Place the hang.exs file in your ‚SAMPLER INSTURMENTS‘ folder (on the Mac this is located on your hard drive e.g. Mac-HD > LIBRARY > APPLICAITON SUPPORT > LOGIC > SAMPLER INSTRUMENTS)

4. Copy the HANG! samples folder to a place of your choosing (preferably the same LOGIC folder so Logic can find them easily).

5. Start Logic and create a new instrument track with the EXS24 loaded – the HANG sample set should be available as a patch.

This instrument, invented in 2000 by Swiss instrument makers Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer of Panart, has since its inauguration drawn unexpected worldwide demand and caused the little workshop of both inventors in Bern to restrict their output to a limited amount. Today one has to set his name on a long waiting list to eventually get hold of a new hang one day. My instrument is a first generation hang with a so called „Hitzazkiar“ tuning, a persian scale with the tone row A3, D4, Eb4, F#4, G4, A4, Bb4, C#5 and D5. I’m quite fond of this tuning since it is a bit more „spicy“ and has more in-build tension than normal pentatonic tunings. The hang unfortunatly has been spoiled too often lately in cheap harmonious world-music-kitsch clichees, since it is very easy to tap on a hang and produce charming consonant sound patterns without big effort. I believe the potential of the instrument has still not been fully explored, apart from brilliant musicians like Manu Delago, who had millions of people watching him on youtube playing on two hangs here.
